Formed in 1988, the Stern/Andrist Duo has performed throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Germany and in China where their 2002 tour took them to the cities of Shenyang, Yantai, and Xiamen. Their world-premiere performances include Winterscapes Book II, written for them by David Loeb of the Curtis and Mannes composition faculties, a world-premiere recording of Three Poems by Donald Erb for the CRI label, and Le souvenir de l'oubli, a work written for them by Francois Rose; their performance of this work helped it to win 2nd Prize at the 5th International Edvard Grieg Competition for Composers in Oslo, Norway, 2001. They played at New York?s Steinway Hall in a recital sponsored by the government of Saskatchewan, Canada, and have toured Saskatchewan under the auspices of the provincial Arts Council. They have performed as resident artists at the Banff and Ravinia summer festivals and broadcast on WNCN-New York, WCLV-Cleveland, and WVTF-Roanoke in a live broadcast from the Sonoklect Festival. Both performers hold the DMA degree from the Juilliard School and have been on the faculties of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. Mr. Stern and Ms. Andrist are married and are both members of the critically acclaimed Strata, a trio in which the two of them are joined by clarinetist Nathan Williams. They reside, with their son Kenneth, in the Washington, D.C. area where they both perform with the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the 21st Century Consort, the Contemporary Music Forum and the Left Bank Concert Society
Ms. Andrist is the 1994 first prize winner of the San Antonio International Keyboard Competition, and was presented in across-Canada solo recital tour as winner of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition. She has appeared as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the Juilliard Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall, and the CBC Vancouver Symphony. She has participated in premieres of new works in Canada and the United States, and has recorded for Albany Records, Summit Records, Capstone Records, and CBC Radio.
In addition to his activities with Strata and the duo, Mr. Stern has given recitals and chamber music performances at the Library of Congress, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall, as well as throughout the United States, Canada, and in Norway. He has also performed at the Marlboro, Norfolk and Bowdoin summer festivals, and appeared as soloist with orchestras throughout the United States. Mr. Stern is currently Associate Professor and chair of the string division at the University of Maryland School of Music.
